Dow Sponsors Habitat for Humanity Home in Fort Saskatchewan

Fort Saskatchewan - August 15, 2011

Dow Chemical Canada will partner with Habitat for Humanity to break ground on a home in Fort Saskatchewan. The house adds to a growing list of more than 25,000 Habitat for Humanity builds that Dow has sponsored around the world since 1983, including one in Edmonton in 2002 and another in Fort Saskatchewan in 2008.

“Dow is a global company with strong local roots. The men and women of Dow place great value on working alongside their neighbours to make Dow hometowns better places to live and work,” said Joe Deutscher, Site Operations Director – Dow Fort Saskatchewan. “We’re proud to be partnering with Habitat once again, and to make a difference for our local community as we mark 50 years of operations in Fort Saskatchewan.”

The duplex home will be built on the corner of 101 Street and 96A Avenue, backing on to the Habitat for Humanity duplex built in 2008, which was also supported by Dow. The ground-breaking will take place this month and the build will span around six months – with a key dedication taking place in the spring of 2012.

"It’s a pleasure for us to contribute funds and employee volunteers to help make this project possible,” said Karen deMontarnal, Dow’s Project Leader supporting this Habitat for Humanity build. “Dow is providing $70, 000 in funding to this build, along with $6, 500 worth of Dow manufactured material (including STYROFOAM ™, WEATHERMATE™ Housewrap, FROTH-PAK™ Foam Sealant, GREAT STUFF ™ Foam).”

Habitat homeowners need to satisfy three criteria before they can be selected. They must need affordable housing; they must be able to repay an interest-free Habitat mortgage; and they must be willing to partner with Habitat, which means putting 500 hours of “sweat equity” into the home and helping to build alongside other volunteers.

Dow’s commitment to Habitat for Humanity spans nearly 30 years and includes financial, product and volunteer contributions through a global partnership. The company has supported the construction of
more than 25,000 homes – helping families live in decent, affordable housing in more than 20 countries worldwide.
