Responsible Care
As a member of the Chemistry Industry Association of Canada (CIAC), Dow Canada is committed to the Responsible Care® ethic, principles and Codes of Practice in its daily operations. Responsible Care is a voluntary industry-wide initiative launched by the CIAC in 1985 to guide member organizations in safely managing chemicals through creation to manufacturing to disposal or recycling. It encourages companies in approximately 50 countries to ‘do the right thing’ and dedicate themselves, their technology and their business practices to sustainability – the ongoing betterment of society, the environment and the economy.
At Dow, protecting people and the environment is part of every decision we make. We are continuously improving our products, operations, processes and environmental performance, while at the same time, safeguarding our employees and the communities in which we operate.
Through information sharing and a rigorous management system of checklists, performance indicators and verification procedures, Responsible Care enables the industry to demonstrate improvements and develop policies and procedures that address opportunities. Periodic external verifications, which include independent industry and environmental experts, test compliance with Responsible Care’s codes.
Dow Canada successfully completed a Responsible Care reverification in late 2010. Through its successful verifications Dow continues to demonstrate that its Canadian sites meet their commitments to improving environmental and safety performance. As part of these verifications, recommendations for improvement are made by the external auditors. These recommendations are implemented alongside the steps we are taking to help achieve Dow’s 2015 Sustainability Goals.
