Dow Biocides Receives Approval of GLUTEX Sanitizers by the DEFRA

Atlanta, GA - January 28, 2009

Dow Biocides, a business unit of The Dow Chemical Company, announces the approval of its GLUTEX™ sanitizer products by the UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) for use in the control of Disease of Poultry and General Orders.  Proprietary formulated GLUTEX sanitizers contain the highly effective microbiocide glutaraldehyde that prevents cross contamination and controls vegetative pathogens on farms, including swine, turkey and poultry housing facilities, hatcheries and associated equipment.

“Our GLUTEX Sanitizers have proven efficacy, with independent research data showing positive results against major swine, poultry and animal viruses, including Avian Influenza (H5N1/H6N2) and PRRS,” said Nanette Hermsen, global marketing manager, Dow Biocides. “Deadly diseases can be controlled by preventing microorganism exposure onto the farm environment. GLUTEX Sanitizers will play a key role in establishing a comprehensive biosecurity program.”

Glutaraldehyde has a very low corrosion rate, fast speed of kill and broad spectrum performance against harmful organisms, making it the best choice for animal hygiene.  In fact based on lab results, the GLUTEX GS2 sanitizer shows one of the lowest corrosion rates to a variety of commonly-found farm use metals, making it particularly effective for use on industrial equipment and farm vehicles.  Glutaraldehyde is one of the few biocides that meets the criteria to be called readily biodegradable (OECD 301 A and 306 guidelines) and stays active longer than typically oxidizing biocides. Glutaraldehyde has also been identified by the World HealthOrganization (WHO), as an effective disinfectant against the Avian Influenza virus.

GLUTEX products have been proven effective for farm facilities through testing performed at the Southern Research Institute (SRI), a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) approved laboratory in the United States.  GLUTEX GS2 and GLUTEX GQ1 Sanitizers all passed the Virucidal Effectiveness Test against the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza Virus H5N1.

GLUTEX products are also registered with the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for a broad range of sanitizing applications such as Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, fungi and a variety of viruses pathogenic to animals, including H5N1/H6N2, Newcastle Disease, Marek’s Disease, Porcine Reproductive & Respiratory Syndrome and Hog Cholera.
