Global Paints and Coatings Market Benefits from Dow Biocides Investments in 2006

Dow Biocides, a business unit of The Dow Chemical Company (“Dow”), has demonstrated its commitment to the global paint and coatings market through its recent investments in new biocide actives and formulated products for customers, regional manufacturing as well as localized implementation support provided at its new laboratories and customer application centers.

Within the last year alone, Dow Biocides has introduced CANGUARD™ CM14 Preservative, CANGUARD™ CM1P5 Preservative, CANGUARD™ ULTRA BIT Paste and FILMGUARD™ OIT Fungicidal Agent. The business is planning additional product introductions in the near future.

The new products build on the already extensive paint and coatings portfolio from Dow Biocides which includes solutions for in-can and dry-film preservation, as well as industrial hygiene and quick-kill microbial control, and underscores Dow’s overall strategy to strengthen its performance businesses, to support high-value, end-use applications

CANGUARD CM1P5 and CANGUARD CM14 Preservatives: CANGUARD CM1P5 and CANGUARD CM14 preservative are both broad spectrum, non-formaldehyde biocides developed for the improved protection of industrial water-based products against bacteria, yeasts and fungi. The products are aqueous solutions of CMIT/MIT (5-chloro-2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one and 2-Methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one); one of the world’s most widely used preservatives.
CANGUARD ULTRA BIT Paste: CANGUARD ULTRA BIT Paste is a broad spectrum bactericide used for the protection of industrial water-based paints and coatings against bacteria, fungi and yeasts. It is a highly pure, solid form of BIT (1,2-benzisothiazolin-3-one) that can be used to prepare additional grades of solutions or aqueous suspensions of BIT.
FILMGUARD OIT Fungicidal Agent: FILMGUARD OIT is a broad-spectrum, non-formaldehyde mildewicide developed for the enhanced protection of latex and solvent-based paint dried paint films against bacteria, yeasts and fungi. FILMGUARD OIT is based on the active OIT technology (2-n-octyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one), a widely used biocide active ingredient for dry film preservation.

In addition to local products and sourcing, Dow Biocides has been helping customers identify cost-effective strategies for their biocidal programs at eight state-of-the-art laboratory and application centers around the globe.

“Our customers can count on long-term local support from our highly trained microbiologists to help optimize their formulations to save valuable time and money, as well as access to proprietary technologies like TAUNOVATE^SM high-throughput microbial testing to solve their unique challenges,” said Rick Strittmatter, research and development director, Dow Biocides.

TAUNOVATE high-throughput testing provides a comprehensive evaluation of existing microbial challenges and current biocide performance, while offering valuable insight about how to optimize operations. The qualitative accuracy of TAUNOVATE enables Dow Biocides customers to test a variety of biocide options, including different concentrations of existing biocide, other biocide products and combinations of biocides.

Dow Biocide customer application centers (CAC) and laboratories are open in Buffalo Grove, Illinois, USA; Horgen, Switzerland; Singapore and Shanghai, China. By year-end, CAC centers will be opened in Dubai, United Arab Emirates; Sao Paulo, Brazil; and, Mumbai, India. Centers in Tokyo, Japan and Guangzhou, China are expected to open in 2008.
