Biocides Used Topside and Downhole in Oil and Gas Stimulation

AQUCAR products fight a wide spectrum of bacteria and fungi, working hard to keep your system running efficiently. Microbial contamination in the form of biofilms and biofouling can cause corrosion, souring, well and reservoir plugging. Used with any injection water systems, AQUCAR products help minimize biofilms, aid in the prevention of microbially-influenced corrosion, and reduce well and reservoir souring.

There are several factors that can contribute to possible contamination of fluids during the water injection process. Varying water sources such as lakes, rivers, groundwater or produced water are injected into a well for production and/or stimulation of a gas or oil formation. Each of these water sources have different levels of microbial contamination and biocide chemical demands.

The topside addition of a biocide is essential to ensuring that the water going through the system is as free of contamination as possible. The use of biocides is necessary to preserve water from hours to days depending on how long the water is held before using. By fighting a wide spectrum of bacteria and fungi, AQUCAR products will help keep systems running efficiently during the recovery process.

Just as important as keeping topside fluids free of harmful microbes is ensuring that the fluids traveling downhole are free of contamination. Elevated temperatures, ranging up to 100° C, and chemical compatibility with additives such as oxygen scavengers, polymers and sulfides all contribute to the proper selection of biocides for use in continuous water feed systems.

Offering a range of benefits like quick-kill performance, improved biodegradation and low sensitization, AQUCAR products are suitable for applications in remote geographies where harsh and extreme environments require greater ease of use and an outstanding environmental and safety profile. For applications as diverse as fracturing fluids, drilling muds, and completion fluids, AQUCAR products are available in liquid or solid form as well as have the added convenience of being available in jugs or water soluble bags for select products.

For fluid preservation: AQUCAR Water Treatment Microbiocides help prevent the degradation of drilling muds and completion fluids, with proven success for fluids used to control pressure. Products also protect stimulation workover, fracturing and packer fluids.

For biofouling control: AQUCAR Water Treatment Microbiocides help enhance production and assist in separation, improve water injection systems, aid in production systems, improve hydrotesting and control sulfate-reducing bacteria.

Key AQUCAR chemistries for use in biofouling control, anaerobic bacterial control, and fluid preservation include glutaraldehyde, glut/quat blends, DBNPA, bronopol, and dimethyl-oxazolidine.

Biocides Used to Prevent Microbial Growth in Fuels and Other Petroleum Distiallates

To help control the problematic growth of unwanted microorganisms in the fuel, Dow Biocides offers FUELSAVER™, which acts as an antimicrobial agent when added to storage or fuel tanks containing diesel oil, fuel oil, gasoline, or kerosene.

BIOBAN™ DXN is a microbial growth inhibiting agent for use in industrial water-based products, including distillation fuels.
