All artificial playing surfaces must comply with regulations and requirements by the International Rugby Board (IRB). In order to establish its suitability for installation, testing of an artificial surface is done by a series of laboratory tests such as durability, climatic resistance and player and ball interaction conducted by certified, independent testing institutes. Once installed, the performance requirements together with construction requirements are tested through a series of field testing which includes the following:

The reaction of a ball to the surface (ball/surface interaction)
The reaction of a rugby player to the surface (player/surface interaction)
The resistance of the surface to wear, tear and the environment (durability)

Only a product that has completed both the laboratory and field-testing will be granted the Approved Status by the local National Rugby Union.
