Dow Presents Enhanced Polyethylene Resin Specially Designed for the Artificial Turf Yarn Market

Cologne, Germany - October 31, 2007

Dow announced today at the FSB international trade fair the launch of an enhanced polyethylene resin for high-performance artificial turf systems. By working with machinery suppliers to the artificial turf market Dow has designed a resin grade to meet the demand for highly resilient yarns with softer touch, which will enable yarn producers to provide the market with high performance and durable yarn that will help satisfy players and sports field owners for years to come.

A leading force in the development of innovative turf solutions, Dow develops polyethylene yarn technology that is designed to create high-performance playing fields.

“We are pleased to introduce this new grade, based on the proven DOWLEX™ polyethylene resin design, to artificial grass yarn producers, who have been looking for a single resin with the triple combination of high performance, easy processability, and versatility of application use,” said Sandeep Acharya, European Marketing Manager for yarn polymers at Dow.

“Dow continues to innovate in this market, and deliver polymer grades that help athletes and facility owners to enjoy artificial grass fields of very high quality and performance.”

Product characteristics and performance

The new grade, whose development label is XZ 89438.00, has a density of 0.930 g/cc and a melt index (I2) of 2.3. The lower density, when compared to the successful industry benchmark DOWLEX™ SC 2108G, brings enhanced soft touch and improved tear resistance, and thus provide critical benefits for fibrillated tape yarn, as well as for the recent development of profiled yarns. This new DOWLEX grade indeed elevates DOWLEX-based turf systems into a higher level of functional performance and resistance to wear and tear.

“The new grade is essentially a single resin that advances the product performance of both fibrillated tape and monofilament grass yarn, while also addressing the polymer processing requirements of the yarn converters”, said Peter Sandkuehler, Technical Services and Development for yarn at Dow.

“For monofilament yarn, the new grade provides greater resiliency (or bounce back) of the grass by balancing the needs for elastic recovery and for temperature resistance of the yarn. For fibrillated tape yarn, the new grade delivers greater resistance to fibrillation by improvements in tear resistance of about 45%. This results in more durable and better performing turf.”

The new grade is specifically designed and produced for artificial grass; hence yarn manufacturers can achieve performance characteristics without the need of blending multiple resins. The enhanced resin can be run at the same or even higher output rates than DOWLEX™ SC 2108G.
