Lano Sports Teams Up with Dow to Produce Polyurethane Backed Artificial Turf

United Kingdom - January 15, 2007

Lano Sports has formed a winning partnership with The Dow Chemical Company (“Dow”) to produce artificial turf made with polyurethane backing systems. As the first European manufacturer to team up with Dow’s polyurethane flooring business for this new generation of polyurethane backing systems, Lano Sports offers the artificial turf market a distinctive, improved product.

A leading force in the development of innovative turf solutions, Dow develops polyurethane backing technology that is designed to create a high-performance playing field. Backing systems made with Dow polyurethane technology help artificial turf stand up to tough conditions, while supporting athletes in play. DOW™ ENFORCER™ Sport polyurethane backing system delivers excellent tuft bind and dimensional stability, even when the playing field is continually wet. It effectively locks the fibres in place to the backing, allowing for improved durability and longer life. Plus it minimizes the possibility of distortion and shrinkage. The outcome is a uniform and predictable playing surface that will help retain its appearance for years to come.

Lano Sports will also produce DOW™ ENHANCER™ Sport polyurethane foams. Thanks to the added value of shock absorption, ENHANCER™ Sport aims at the right amount of give for both players and balls. It also softens the impact by providing cushioning for running or falling athletes.

In addition to the excellent physical properties of the turf product, Dow polyurethane systems offer Lano Sports benefits including: speed of production, rapid curing and low coating weight. Manufactured by Perpetual Machine Company of Dalton, Georgia, USA, the equipment used to mix Dow polyurethane is being used on Lano Sport’s own coating line. The mixing machine is simple to operate, allowing the manufacturer to easily apply both the polyurethane pre-coat and the cushion for artificial turf. By acquiring this new equipment, Lano Sports can improve the quality of their turf, without needing to build additional manufacturing facilities.

While it does require an upfront capital investment, the polyurethane process offers energy savings and the potential for increased operating capacity. In addition, polyurethane dries quickly by curing rather than by water evaporation, thereby increasing the manufacturer’s production capacity. While polyurethane requires more control and care in the mixing process, it is simple to apply to the turf, makes little mess, and is easy to keep clean.
