ANGUS - Sterlington Operations Fast Fact Sheet

The ANGUS manufacturing facility Sterlington, Louisiana, is the flagship production site for ANGUS Chemical Company (‘ANGUS’), a wholly owned subsidiary of The Dow Chemical Company. ANGUS is the world’s only company dedicated to the manufacture of nitroalkanes and their derivatives, and the Sterlington site produces more than 40 specialty products used in a wide spectrum of end-use markets.

• ANGUS employs approximately 180 full-time employees

• Located in Ouachita Parish in Sterlington, La., ANGUS has several production units on the 80-acre site.
• Sterlington is currently the largest manufacturing site for ANGUS Chemical Company and includes dedicated research and development facilities. Other production facilities for the company are based in Niagara Falls, NY and Ibbenbüren, Germany.
• Operations for ANGUS began in the 1930s.  By 1934, ANGUS received the first patent for a batch process and continuous-flow reaction to produce nitroparaffins.  Commercial manufacturing began in Sterlington in the mid 1950s.

• ANGUS was the first company – and continues to be the only company worldwide dedicated to the manufacturing and marketing of nitroparaffins.

• Since 2004, ANGUS has made capital investments and expansions to the Sterlington site amounting to more than $50 million. This includes capacity expansion projects which enabled ANGUS to increase volume for several key products, including SYNTHATANE™ NP 200, Nitroalkane Intermediate (2-Nitropropane) and AMP™ brand 2-Amino-2-methyl-1-propanol products.
• Showing commitment to nitroalkane-based chemistry, ANGUS announced it will build a new research and development (R&D) manufacturing plant to assist in the scale-up and validation of next-generation nitroalkane-based products.
• The new R&D facility will support the development of novel processes and products for more than seven market segments, including latex paints, metalworking fluids, dispersants and rubber shortstops.
• Dow is making a $10-million capital investment for the new R&D facility, which is expected to break ground in 2008, with validation of new products to begin in 2010.
• These investments directly underscore Dow’s strategy to invest for growth in its performance businesses.

• Twenty-percent reduction in TRI emissions since 1999.
• ISO 9002 certification, a comprehensive standard covering all aspects of quality systems from production to product delivery.
• On-going waste minimization and recycling programs.

• ANGUS products, such as AMP 2-Amino-2-methyl-1-propanol, NITROBOOST™ KIX Fuel Additive, CHAINGUARD™ Hydroxylamine, SYNTHATANE brand nitroparaffins and TRIS AMINO™ Tris (hydroxymethyl)-amino methane, are specialty products that provide customers with distinct performance properties.
• The products are used in a wide variety of markets, including pharmaceuticals, personal care and cosmetics, metalworking fluids, paints, coatings, ink, leather tanning, agricultural intermediates and hobby fuels.

• Annual contribution of more than $50,000 to the United Way and other community outreach programs.
• Dedicated to local charitable and educational institutes, including Adopt-A-School Partner with Sterlington High and A.L. Smith Elementary schools.
• Leading sponsor of the Process Technology Laboratory (PTEC) at Louisiana Delta College which prepares students to work as process operators in chemical, oil & gas, power-generating and pharmaceutical industries.
