ANGUS Chemical Company Responds to USA Today Article, "Health Risks Stack Up for School Kids Near Industry"
Sterlington, LA - December 09, 2008 ANGUS Chemical Company is committed to protecting the health and safety of its employees and surrounding communities. As a wholly owned subsidiary of The Dow Chemical Company, ANGUS makes Environment, Health & Safety a top priority and proactively takes leadership positions in this critical area. "We live in the community. The health and safety of our employees, their families and the residents of where we have the privilege to operate is our top priority," said Sterlington Plant Manager, Karen Kay. "As an integral member of the Sterlington community, as well as other communities where we operate, the concerns raised in the USA Today article are concerns shared by ANGUS." Working closely with the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LDEQ), a leader in the reduction of toxic air emissions, ANGUS participates in the LDEQ air toxics emission reduction program. This program includes ambient air standards that protect human health and technology-based (Maximum Available Control Technology) standards that must be met for every emission source. As a result of ANGUS Chemical's implementation of the LDEQ led program, as well as additional voluntary efforts, ANGUS has contributed to a significant reduction of air toxics in Louisiana. "By working closely with the LDEQ to ensure the Sterlington site complies with or exceeds LDEQ ambient air standards for all air emissions, ANGUS continues its leadership position in this very important area," noted Kay. ANGUS is confident these measures, performed in conjunction with the LDEQ, result in protection of both the public health and the environment. It appears that the calculation model used to support a recent USA Today article is mostly speculative and has been called into question by at least one state regulatory agency, ANGUS will always review such data in close detail and work with both independent and government agencies to ensure the accuracy and validity of data concerning impacts to human health or the environment that may affect or be affected by ANGUS facility operations. Additionally, ANGUS is and remains in full compliance with all local, county, state and federal regulations for standards.
