ANGUS Trials VOC-Free Multifunctional Amine for Paints and Coatings
Designed to help customers meet increasing call to limit volatile organic compounds Nürnberg, Germany - May 08, 2007 ANGUS Chemical Company (“ANGUS”), a wholly-owned subsidiary of The Dow Chemical Company (“Dow”), is introducing an enhanced multifunctional amine for use in the development of water-based architectural and decorative paints containing virtually no volatile organic compounds (VOC). “European restrictions on VOC content and consumer concerns have led to increased demand for low VOC and VOC-free paints and finishes,” explained Liam Doherty, global marketing manager for ANGUS Chemical Company. “The multifunctional amine technology available from ANGUS is already an enabling technology in the move to low VOC paints. Our non-VOC multifunctional amine will help our customers to formulate low VOC and VOC-free paints and finishes without compromising the quality of their product offering.” As well as being virtually free of VOC, the enhanced multifunctional amine acts as an efficient co-dispersant for pigments and adjusts and maintains pH levels. With a boiling point exceeding 255º C, the product also provides more open time for paint. Additional benefits afforded by the non-VOC multifunctional amine include low vapor pressure, low odor, virtually no yellowing, primary amine functionality, increased color acceptance and the ability to reduce dispersants, surfactants and glycols. The product trials are expected to conclude in the mid-2007 time frame with full product commercialization likely to occur by end of 2007.
