Smart Solutions for the Manufacturing Industry lead to lower ozone depletion and cost efficiency
The Dow Chemical Company in collaboration with Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency and the United Nations Development Program in Egypt hosted live demonstrations of latest state of the art machinery

The successful completion of ‘Innovative Low Cost Hydrocarbon Technologies’, a pilot project which allows for more cost-effective and lower environmental impactly-friendly solutions to polyurethane production, was marked with a demonstration of the state of the art technology.
Beginning in 2010, Dow Mideast Systems took part in this turnkey pilot project as the host and testing facility of the newly designed machine, allowing for the use of a technical and economical solution for blowing agents in polyurethane foams. The main objective of the project is to replace the use of ozone-depleting hydro chlorofluorocarbons (HCFC) as blowing agents for PU production. A team of global and local Dow employees worked closely with UNDP experts and the machine supplier to develop and implement the full experimental plan.
During a tour of Dow Mideast Systems, the polyurethane manufacturing facility of The Dow Chemical Company in Egypt, approximately 60 visitors including a number of technical directors, officials from the Egyptian government, delegates from the UNDP and others representing a variety of industries received a firsthand look at the new solution in action.
The success of this project contributes to the implementation of the Montreal Protocol on Substances That Deplete the Ozone Layer. The search for low cost hydrocarbon technologies comes within the framework of cooperation between the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency (EEAA) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) on phasing out substances that deplete the ozone layer.
The machine was developed by SaipSAIP, an innovation and full-quality driven equipment designer and manufacturer for the polyurethane industry, which was established in 1978 and headquartered in Inverigo (Como,Italy).

More than 20 machine trials were completed by mid- 2011, to validate the use of hydrocarbon-based blowing agents and a different blending concept.
Results from the pilot project showcased the means for a safe and economical switch to the use of hydrocarbons, reducing the impact on the environment, and will helping cost reduction for small and medium sized companies.
