Bio-plastics are making an important contribution to the sustainability of plastics used in packaging applications by reducing the consumption of fossil fuels used to make more conventional plastics. In response to market needs, The Dow Chemical Company (DOW) has developed a range of impact modifiers and process aids for PLA that enable and extend the applications open to bio-plastics. These impact modifiers increase impact strength of finished articles and reduce breakages that can occur during cutting and hole punching while maintaining the excellent clarity of the base polymer. The process aids increase melt strength helping to facilitate the processing of PLA using complex processes, such as blown film extrusion, reducing process costs and extending the range of applications open to PLA.
