PARALOIDTM BPM-520 supports growth of sustainable bioplastic products

Dow Plastics Additives, a business unit of The Dow Chemical Company (NYSE: DOW), introduces its latest development to the field of bio-plastics for manufacturers trying to penetrate the packaging market with environmentally advanced solutions for sustainable growth.

PARALOIDTM BPM-520 is a new impact modifier that improves the impact resistance of opaque, injection-molded Polylactic Acid (PLA) articles with minimal effect on heat distortion temperature and stiffness.

When blended with PLA, PARALOID BPM-520 modifier extends choice for brand owners looking to use sustainable polymers in applications such as opaque ice cream and food packaging and semi-durable applications such as cosmetic packaging and housing for laptops or mobile phones.

Manufactured from corn, PLA has a lower carbon footprint than many polymer alternatives, but its brittle nature means that modifiers are required to improve its impact resistance. PARALOID BPM-520 has been designed specifically for use with PLA injection-moulded resins in order to provide high impact strength at room and sub-zero temperatures. It also provides benefits in PLA blends such as PLA/PC

Converters will appreciate its excellent flow properties and rigidity retention of parts and brand owners will welcome its colorability and excellent surface finish. PARALOID BPM-520 can also be used in compliance with the European Union Regulation (EU) 10/2011 on plastics materials intended to contact food and with US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requirements.

“Brand owners are always on the look out for products which offer improved environmental performance to keep up with consumer demand – but they don’t want to compromise on end-use performance and need to maintain a cost-competitive and efficient production process,” explained Robin Madgwick, marketing manager for Dow Plastic Additives.

“We’ve worked closely with leading manufacturers of bio-based resins to offer an effective impact modifier which can be made available in user-friendly, pre-dispersed formats that could help further extend the use of sustainable, bio-based PLA resins into injection moulded durable and opaque packaging, which is a real step forward for the industry,” continued Madgwick.

PARALOIDTM BPM-520 is produced by Dow in Jurong, Singapore and is available for sale in Asia, Europe and South America. PARALOID BPM-520 is the latest addition to a series of Dow Plastic Additives materials aimed at supporting PLA users.
