Dow worker

Building Homes in the Philippines

More than 30 Dow people from around the globe volunteered for a week-long building blitz in March 1999 to build homes with Habitat for Humanity in Manila, the Philippines – an extension of a long Dow-Habitat for Humanity partnership.

Dow has supported Habitat for Humanity since the early 1980s – donating materials of STYROFOAM* brand insulation, sponsoring Habitat homes and contributing "sweat" equity through teams of Dow volunteers.

Since 1994, Dow has donated more than $2 million in financial support and products. In addition, Dow employees have volunteered at virtually all of Habitat International's major building sites since 1990. As the official supplier of rigid foam insulation through the year 2001, Dow will donate an estimated $1.3 million of STYROFOAM brand insulation. STYROFOAM makes homes more comfortable – keeping them warm in the winter and cool in the summer – and lowers utility costs for Habitat homeowners.

Appledore

Learning About the Ecosystem

The Appledore sailing vessel on Michigan's Lake Huron provides education programs for school children. The Dow Chemical Company Foundation's focus on developing sustainable, community-based programs was a factor in its decision to provide a $183,000 challenge grant to the BaySail environmental education program. BaySail provides hands-on opportunities for students to sample, analyze and better understand the Saginaw Bay ecosystem. Support for this project continues through the foundation's effort to help fund a scholarship program to provide all school children an opportunity to experience the Appledore program.

Lighthouse

Bay City Lighthouse Renovation

The Dow Chemical Company owns the first rear range lighthouse ever built. Located in Bay City, Mich., the range lights were used to guide the ships into the Saginaw River. Dow purchased the land and the lighthouse in 1989, after the U.S. Coast Guard abandoned it in 1980.

Thanks to financial support from The Dow Chemical Company Foundation, the Saginaw River Marine Historical Society announced in early 2000 that it would begin restoring the lighthouse to the way it looked in 1950.
